Bridges of Saint Mark Sponsors a Water Project in Haiti

In response to the catastrophe in Haiti, where a 7.2 earthquake struck on August 14, 2021, at 8:29 am local time, Bridges of Saint Mark sent funds to “Water With Blessings”, to support their mission to Les Cayes, a commune (township) in the middle of the hardest-hit region in Haiti.

Water with Blessings, incorporated in October 2011, and registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit is an organization that, “equips, empowers and entrusts mothers as agents of clean water and compassion for their communities”.

“The funds will sponsor 100 mothers who, “will attend a training learning how to use the Sawyer PointOne water filter system which functions much like kidney dialysis does to filter out impurities in the water, leaving clean, drinkable water. This amazingly effective filter can be set up in five minutes. It requires only a 5-gallon container and the filtration kit. It is simple enough that adults of all education levels can learn how to use it. No electricity, no complicated maintenance… guaranteed for a lifetime of clean, safe water!”

The mothers will “attend a training that is both spiritual and practical. They are empowered to help prevent the spread of waterborne illness and equipped with a filter to share clean water. They sign a covenant, a sacred commitment to God and their community that they will use their filters to serve others. Then they go forth to love and serve their God and neighbor, through a daily, life-saving ministry of filtering water.”

Each “Water Woman” promises to help 4 families. According to WWB’s Executive Director Sister Larraine Lauter, the average household in Haiti has 5.6 people; so if each Water Woman helps four families, we can estimate that 2,240 people will have access to clean water. She also estimates that each household averages 2.2 children so we can estimate that out of 2,240 people, 1,018 children will have access to clean drinking water.

This project is scheduled to launch on August 23, 2021. Reports will soon follow.
